What is Holistic Massage?
Everyone enjoys a massage and Holistic Massage has as its main aim the relaxation of the entire body through gentle yet firm movements which connect the therapist with the client on spiritual and physical levels. Many of the techniques Marie uses are based on Swedish massage, which is the most well known and popular type of treatment. It consists of a number of movements including:
Effleurage: long and gliding strokes along the body which help you relax, reduce tension and stress levels and increase circulation of blood flow to the heart.
Petrissage: the kneading and squeezing action of petrissage works on muscle tension and smoothes out any lumps or impure substances from the muscles so that they work more efficiently.
Tapotement: gentle pounding of the body like drumming which is usually used at the end of a massage session to revitalise.
Friction: This is work on the muscle fibres using circular or perpendicular motions.
The use of oil helps in creating friction and stretching the muscles; Marie uses Songbird waxes which are very smooth and contain enriching essential oil blends to add to the healing experience. In addition to the traditional techniques, Marie can also work on aligning the energy system and chakras using sound and crystals. Note: This is not a deep tissue or sports massage but focuses on relaxation and general well-being.

How can Massage help me?
Holistic massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility whilst easing tension. It also helps to align the chakras and cleanse the energy field so that you feel more balanced and energised.
Who can have Holistic Massage?
It is suitable for adults of all ages who are in good health although anyone with a serious medical complaint should inform their therapist before undertaking a course of treatment. GP consent is advisable for certain conditions. It is not advisable to have massage whilst in the first trimester of pregnancy. Please consult the FAQ page for a list of contraindications.
What can I expect from a treatment?
The first session lasts a little longer as it includes a consultation in which you will be asked to give details about your health and lifestyle. This information will be treated strictly confidentially. You will also be asked to sign a consent form showing that you understand the aims and limitations of the treatments.
A full body massage lasts around an hour and a back, neck and shoulder massage half an hour. You will be given some time to remove your outer clothing (whilst keeping underwear on) and position yourself on the couch with a towel over you. Your privacy will be respected at all times. When the treatment is complete you will have a little time to rouse yourself and get dressed in private. You will be offered a glass of water and asked for any feedback.
How often will I need to come?
This will depend upon a number of factors but it is recommended initially to commit to a four week course of treatments after which we can assess your needs and decide whether you would like to continue having regular ‘maintenance’ treatments e.g. every 2 weeks to a month. Responses vary and if there are long-standing symptoms it may take the body a while to begin the healing process.
